Sunrise at Kitty Hawk

Don Krumpos · Diary

I woke up at 5:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise over the ocean. It happened so slow but it was a beautiful start to my day. This was special because I rarely wake up early enough to watch sunrises. I was the only one on the beach that morning. I went for a long walk on the beach once the sun was up. I must have walked for a few miles as the day heated up.

Once I broke camp, I went to Kitty Hawk and saw the memorial there for the first flight by the Wright Brothers. I listed to the ranger give a talk about the Wright Brother’s project. It touched me to think of their dedication through failures to do something no one else has ever done. Dec. 17, 1903 they launched their first flight from that spot. I like to visit places where something important, or even not important, happened but that there is no longer any specific evidence. All there was were markers on the field indicating the distances they had flown. On the large dune, on top there was a huge memorial marking the spot where they had tested their gliders from. The huge wing-shaped, obelisk/monolith-like was impressive on the hill. I love visiting National Monuments and the fact that our government set apart land for our appreciation and enjoyment.

I drove across the state to Greensboro to camp at Hagen Stone campground. It was a nice city campground with a hiking trail I hiked. I made a campfire that I read by that night.
