The Cathedral Spires

Don Krumpos · Diary

Now that it was a Monday, we hoped there would be less tourists. There was not. We got to see more of Deadwood, but then went west for a beautiful drive and take a gander at Devil’s Tower. We decided not to pay the money to get in since the view was so breathtaking from a distance. It truly gave me a feeling of awe looking at this unique monolith. There seems to be something sacred about it and seeing the line of cars going up to gawk does soil the mood. We drove back to Sturgis to see that town and then back to Deadwood to walk around a bit more. We got to see a re-enactment of a 1870’s shooting. I took some photos and we drove again. We wanted to get our hike in at the Cathedral Spires in Custer Park. This was probably our favorite park as this might be the most glorious space in the world. We spent as much time as we could until the sun was starting to come down. We realized we could drive to the Badlands again, since it was looking like rain, to get away from the inclement weather and stay in our free campsite and be that much closer to the drive east. We stopped in Rapid City for a pizza at Independent Ale House.

It was a packed day. A lot of driving but the hike was worth it. Since we knew this campground, it was an easy set up and off to sleep.
