Arthur's First Fish

Don Krumpos · Diary

This has been a great month for summer. I’ve been painting a mural in West Allis with David Carpenter. We are just about finished up. The last two weeks Arthur stayed home with us and was hanging out with his mom. He want paddling with Jody on Krohn’s Lake. We went to a farm called Wilson’s Wish and he got to see the animals and feed the goats. On Wednesday and Thursday we went camping at Peninsula State Park. It was Arthur’s first camping trip with us. He did such a good job and loved every minute. He was a great little camper. We had a nice site in the Welkers Point campground. We stopped at Door County Brewing on the way up for a snack and a beer. Arthur had draft root beer. We stopped at the Peninsula Art School’s exhibit. We got to our site a little early but it was empty, so we set up and then went to the Nicolet Beach. Arthur had fun swimming in the shallow sandy bottomed water. Him and Erin started to build a sand castle. He played on the playground a little bit and then we headed back to camp to make supper. We had sausages, corn on the cob and baked beans. We stayed up late (9 o’clock) and had s’mores. In the morning we made coffee and breakfast of potatoes and bacon. Then we went to the Eagle Tower and went to the top. Arthur was excited to see the tower. We drove into Ephraim and went to the Hardy gallery to see their Invitational exhibit. We walked around Fish Creek for awhile and had a beer and a snack at Bayside Tavern in their back patio. We bought some swimming trucks for me at On Deck. We got some coffee and beer at the General Store. We went to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse for a tour and Arthur got to go to the top of the tower there. We then went swimming again at Nicolet beach. I like to play games with Arthur in the water. Then we went back to the camp to make supper of pork steaks, pineapple and peas. We had s’mores again later when it got dark. On Friday morning we headed up to Newport State Park. it started to rain so I’m glad we took down our tent before that. The rain held up for our hike through Newport. We got to see the Root Cellar and Arthur liked that and wanted to play house in it. We got back to our car right when is started to rain, so we left and went to Wild Tomato in Sister Bay for pizza. Then we headed back home.

On Saturday was the Shanty Days Parade. Donnie and his friend came over for breakfast and then we went downstairs to watch it. Wes came just in time and we got to watch it together. We walked around the art market afterward. Following that, Kevin Naze took Arthur out to go fishing. Wes and I went and Arthur caught his first fish, a pumpkin seed. He had a lot of fun fishing and playing around the dock on West Alaska Lake. On Sunday Arthur won a fishing pole at the fish tournament’s awards. He was pretty happy and spent the rest of the time trying to fish in the marina, without a line or tackle. He said he wanted to catch a mermaid. That night was the fireworks and the three of us took the arty cart down and had a nice evening. It was a great summer so far.
