Draft / pragmatic reflection
One of the questions I keep turning over is whether my cautiousness around money is wisdom… or inherited fear. My parents were heroic with their frugality: every dollar stretched, every purchase planned. They took risks only when absolutely necessary.
I grew up believing that responsible people: • delay pleasure • avoid debt • plan every expense • sacrifice for the greater good
Those principles aren’t wrong — but they were born in an era of layoffs, recessions, and sky-high interest rates. They were survival tools.
I inherited them as identity.
Now I sometimes freeze up around purchases, even ones that support my creative work. I worry about buying the wrong thing, missing a sale, making my wife anxious, derailing our future. But am I being careful… or scared?
Here’s what I’m learning: Responsibility is not the same as fear. And abundance is not the same as recklessness.
Abundance is: • trusting that my work has value • investing in the tools that sustain my creativity • spending in alignment with purpose, not panic • refusing to make financial scarcity part of my child’s emotional landscape
It’s an unlearning — but a holy one.
